Why is it important to know your temperament?
Temperament is such a cunning system of individual (i.e., genetically predetermined) human properties that determines our energetic and emotional-dynamic characteristics of the psyche and behavior. Not everything in this definition is clear and obvious, so let’s break it down. The energy component of temperament is expressed in the general level of activity, the ability to withstand mental stress, sensitivity to various life situations and the nature/methods of responding to them. Emotional characteristics of the psyche are manifested in a person’s stable tendency to certain emotions: someone is more predisposed to the emotions of anxiety, someone to joy, someone to aggression, etc. Well, dynamic properties make themselves felt through the speed of mental processes and the speed of adaptation to new conditions.
The type of temperament is determined by the type of higher nervous activity of a person. There are four such types in total and each has its own specific temperament:
- Sanguine;
- Choleric;
- Phlegmatic;
- Melancholic.
In its pure form, any of these types is quite rare. Most often, there is one most pronounced type (it is considered the leading one), on which are superimposed the traits and manifestations of other types of temperament, which are less pronounced.
