Eating as a way to cope
Candy, cookies, another cutlet, another sandwich… Phew, I think I’m full!
Seizing is like the tip of an iceberg , which hides such an assortment of problems that one can only be surprised at how resourcefully we run away not only from solving the problem as such, but also from simply looking at it.
Possible mental causes:
- inability to experience negative emotions;
- boredom, lack of positive emotions;
- desire to calm down, etc.
Eating in any case is pleasant for us, since the feeling of fullness and the elimination of hunger in most cases have a very beneficial effect on our well-being. But at some point we felt that food could be used for something other than its intended purpose: make it a mediator through which you can get from the point “I feel bad” to the point “I feel good” without unnecessary analysis and torment.
The first thing to find out is: when did it start? What happened during this period, how did you feel? Even if nothing has changed on the external plane, do not forget that some processes are constantly happening inside you.
At what point did you establish this connection in yourself: I feel bad — oh, food! — I’m better.
And now the second important point: why is this still going on? Why wasn’t your “I feel bad” temporary? A job you hate, difficulties in relationships, dissatisfaction with yourself, a desire to go back to the past or to do…
