CBT: techniques for working with maladaptive thoughts
The purpose of the techniques in this group is to refute existing dysfunctional thoughts.
To this end, the client is asked to do a series of exercises.
1. Analysis of the pros and cons of stereotypical thoughts
A person analyzes his maladaptive thought and writes down the arguments for and against on a piece of paper. After this, the client is required to read what he wrote down every day. With constant practice of the exercise, after some time, “true” arguments will be strengthened in the human consciousness, and “wrong” ones will be erased from thinking.
2. Weighing all the pros and cons
This exercise is not about analyzing your unconstructive thoughts, but about finding probable solutions.
For example, a woman compares what is more important for her: maintaining her safety by not having contact with men, or allowing possible risks into her own life in order to end up with a strong family.
3. Use of authoritative sources of information
This technique involves listing to a person arguments taken from scientific literature, substantiated statistical information, and the personal experience of the treating specialist.
